Consumo de aceitunas | table olives consum

Olives, along with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, form part of the basic foodstuff of the Mediterranean Diet, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Olives unite the four basic flavors (sweet, salty, bitter, and sour), and can therefore be used in a great range of recipes and dishes, from appetizers and salads, to pizza, pasta, fish, and meat.

With regard to their consumption, experts in nutrition from SEDCA (Spanish Society of Dietetics and Food Science) recommend include olives eating 25 grams a day, which is about 7 olives.

And olives have important properties to look after our body. Do you know what they are?

The benefits of olives

  1. As noted by Interaceituna, olives have cardiovascular benefits and reduce LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol and increase HDL (‘good’) cholesterol thanks to their oleic acid and strong presence of oleate (monounsaturated fatty acid).
  2. They are rich sodium and in vitamins A and E, one of the most important as it protects us from oxidative damage to cells.
  3. They improve digestive transit due to their fiber content.
  4. Olives are a source of iron. Black olives, specifically, contain up to 45.5% of the recommended daily iron intake.
  5.  They contain calcium to look after bones.

At Goya Spain we offer a wide range of preparations of our olives (from table olives, black olives, and specially stuffed, to our range of reduced sodium olives and capers), to bring healthy flavor to you dishes. What are you waiting for?

Conservar aceite en verano | storing olive oil

Storing olive oil in summer so that it retains all its properties is easy, but not everyone does it correctly. Today we share with you a serie of tips from Almazaras de la Subbética to make sure your Extra Virgin Olive Oil retains all its benefits.

  • Store extra virgin olive oil in a cool, dry place with a more or less constant temperature of around 18 to 20 degrees.
  • It is very important to ensure that the oil is not exposed to direct sunlight so store bottles of oil in a dark place or somewhere with little light.
  • The bottle should be firmly closed after each use, to prevent any risk of oxidation.

If we don’t follow these small steps when storing olive oil, our EVOO can deteriorate and start to lose its properties, its color and its texture and turn rancid.

Tribute to Frank Calvo

The history of Goya Spain is intertwined with Frank Calvo, our Frank, who after an extensive professional career in Brooklyn and Manhattan, didn’t hesitate to remain connected to GOYA® from our factory in Sevilla.

Always a friendly face, Frank was a GOYA® Ambassador in Spain, transmitting the values of his family, the Great GOYA® Family, to all.

Last December Frank Calvo was a special guest at our traditional awards ceremonies for staff of Goya Spain, where he was presented with a tribute for his 60 years of sevice to the company, along with his wife, colleagues and the Unanue family.

Desayuno saludable | healthy breakfast

Without a doubt, the best way to start the day is with a healthy breakfast. What’s more, as the nutritionist Aitor Sánchez of the of Olive Oils from Spain Aprende a comer sano (learn to eat healthily) program highlights, breakfast is “an opportunity to instill good eating habits in the family”.

When it comes to what we can eat for breakfast, Aprende a comer sano offers us some options which we can build into our daily lives. Among them:

  • Bowl of yoghurt with chopped fruit.
  • Homemade fruit smoothies from fruit such as bananas or milkshakes based on yoghurt.
  • Chia pudding to which cocoa or red fruits low in sugar can be added.

And, using the Mediterranean Diet as a base, we could have whole wheat bread with Extra Virgin Olive Oil for healthy breakfast, to which we could add a source of protein such as tuna or egg.

Aprende a comer sano (Learn to Eat Healthily) is a program developed by Olive Oils from Spain and Compass Group with the aim teaching people of all ages and the whole family how to feed themselves well every day, with olive oil as a key ingredient.

Campo olivos oleoturismo

There’s no doubt about it: physical exercise is important for our health. That is because keeping active is essential for our physical and emotional wellbeing.

Among the different exercise options, walking is one of the very best. Do you know why?

Walking helps us improve our physical condition. Combining a daily balanced diet with the exercise from walking can be more effective at burning fat than other more intense exercises. And it’s also cardio-healthy!

And walking is so easy. No specialised equipment is needed and we can take advantage of any free time we’ve got to do it. As we get into better shape, we can also walk in other spaces, such as strolling among olive groves while enjoying a bit of olive oil tourism.

Pueblo de la Subbetica-OleoturismoWhat is olive oil tourism?

Tourism for activities involving olive oil is a great alternative to traditional tourism, in which activities, tours, accommodation, restaurants, shopping, routes and hiking all centre on olive oil.

When we amble through olive trees, we can relish and learn about life on earth, the excellent benefits of oil and cuisine related to olive groves and EVOO, the basis of the Mediterranean diet.

As the association Olive Oils from Spain points out, olive oil tourism routes are primarily available in Andalusia (in the south) and along the coastal regions of the Mediterranean Sea, areas in which Spanish olive oil production are concentrated.

If you decide to walk among the olive trees in the south, your first destination should be the Subbetica district. Visiting its centenary olive groves will help you learn to distinguish between the real and best extra virgin olive oil while immersed in nature.
